J.R.R. Tolkien in cima a tutti

Sondaggio radio Npr su Top 100 libri Fantasy e FantascienzaL’emittente radiofonica American National Public Radio (NPR), l’11 agosto 2011 ha annunciato i risultati del sondaggio tra gli ascoltatori per stilare la classifica dei migliori cento libri pubblicati di Fantascienza e Fantasy di tutti i tempi. Al sondaggio hanno risposto oltre 60mila persone. Non era possibile votare i titoli di letteratura per ragazzi e per adolescenti (i cosiddetti “young adults”), e questo spiega l’assenza notevole delle serie di Harry Potter della Rowlings. L’emittente NPR ha fatto sapere che il sondaggio estivo del 2012 sarà dedicato a questo genere di libri.

Un libro che non invecchia

La Compagnia dell'Anello nell'edizione Houghton MifflinDando uno sguardo ai risultati del sondaggio, si nota un bel miscuglio tra titoli contemporanei e classici, ma la top 10 contiene alcune sorprese. Come molti prevedevano (tra cui noi), l’opera che ha attirato il maggior numero di voti è stata Il Signore degli Anelli di J.R.R. Tolkien. Del resto, questo capolavoro è il secondo best-seller che sia mai stato scritto, con più di 150 milioni di copie vendute (il primo è naturalmente la Bibbia). Tolkien, inoltre è presente una seconda volta, al 46esimo posto con Il Silmarillion.
La decisione più contestata dai lettori, considerata da molti più che discutibile, è stato l’obbligo di nominare e votare una serie come un unico lavoro collettivo, piuttosto che i singoli libri. Nel sondaggio del NPR il quinto posto è andato alla serie Cronache del Ghiaccio e del Fuoco di George R.R. Martin. Il primo volume della serie è stato pubblicato nel 1996, mentre era previsto in origine come una trilogia, ora aumentato a cinque volumi. L’ultimo libro è stato pubblicato nel luglio di quest’anno. Il lavoro di George R.R. Martin ha recentemente trovato nuova popolarità attraverso l’adattamento tv della HBO della serie, intitolato A Game of Thrones.

Il Silmarillion nell'edizione BallantineDa notare la presenza di autori non considerati di genere come Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Mary Shelley, George Orwell e Aldous Huxley. Si piazzano in buona posizione i mostri sacri come Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein e Kurt Vonnegut. Stupisce, invece, la posizione di Philip K. Dick, solo al 21esimo posto e di Ursula K. LeGuin, al 45esimo (che però bissa poi con una altra presenza al 78esimo) e Michael Moorcock (90esimo). Infine, al centesimo posto degli autori di fantasy o fantascienza più famosi di tutti i tempi si può trovare C.S. Lewis con la sua “trilogia spaziale”, mentre le sue Cronache di Narnia non entrano nemmeno in classifica…

    I primi nove li o letti tutti – e mi fa paicere che “Ender’s game’ – il gioco di Ender – si sia piazzato sul podio. Anche se, per me, è superiore alla pur divertentissima Guida Galattica

    Ne ho letti una discreta quantità.
    Mi sorprende non conoscere il numero tre, e ancor di più trovarcelo visto che Orson Scott Card in tutto ciò che di critica ho letto (in un’altra vita) era sempre trattato come un minore.
