Dopo essere stato annunciato ad agosto, è stato pubblicato ora il volume numero 11 dei Tolkien Studies. La bella novità è la copertina. Ed è una bella sorpresa perché rivela che una foto inedito di Tolkien travestito da Hermès, in occasione della rappresentazione teatrale di un’opera di Aristofane, la Pace, nel luglio 1911. 
Il futuro scrittore ha 19 anni e sta frequentando l’ultimo anno di college alla King Edward’s School di Birmingham. Insieme ad altri amici, tra cui i più stretti sono Rob Gilson, Geoffrey Bache Smith e Christopher Wiseman, forma il gruppo letterario conosciuto come i “Tcbs” (Tea Club and Barrovian Society), il circolo di amici di scuola che speravano di raggiungere la grandezza pubblicando poesia e narrativa. Tra l’altro, l’immagine era parzialmente nota proprio perché da essa era stata tratta una delle rare immagini che si hanno di G.B. Smith.
Contenuti del volume
Scorrendo i titoli dei contenuti nel volume si scopre che ci sono saggi firmati da Michael Drout, Verlyn Flieger e John Garth. Ma anche altri titoli sembrano molto interessanti. Anche gli amanti delle lingue elfiche saranno interessati ad approfondimenti come quello di Nelson Goering: Lŷg and Leuca: “Elven-Latin”, Archaic Languages and the Philology of Britain. Oppure, il testo di Michael DC Drout e dei suoi colleghi: Tolkien’s Creation of the Impression of Depth. Ricca è anche la sezione delle recensioni, a partire da quella di Verlyn Flieger sulla Caduta di Artù! Si passano in rassegna gli ultimi libri di saggistica pubblicati ed è presente un giudizio molto approfondito della struttura dei sostantivi nella primitiva lingua Qenya e un’analisi del Qenyaqetsa da parte di Garth.
